The following four destinations are a payoff to such planning. Each matches a familiar city centre with landscape that is rarely visited by visitors.

Turtlehead Peak requires a lot more. The ascent is about six hundred metres of bare ground with practically no shade, and summer afternoons are really hazardous, not just hot.

The controlling constraint here is heat. Most visiting tourists are back at the car before ten in the morning between June and September. 

Monte Carlo – The Ridge Above the Principality

Monaco has a two-square-kilometre coastline, which is supported by limestone cliffs that rise several hundred metres. The horizontal connection is peculiar: the harbour and the ridge are so near each other that hikers on the higher paths can identify single yachts below.

The landscape is largely French, but not Monaco, and this implies that entry is easy and free. The trailheads are linked to the coastal towns by regional buses.

The Nietzsche trail leads between Èze-sur-Mer and the medieval village of Èze, and gains approximately four hundred metres on a rocky mule trail. The philosopher is said to have worked out portions of Thus Spoke Zarathustra during his walks, and the path has been named after him since.

The more dramatic result is the blunt headland above La Turbie, Tete de Chien. The whole principality is directly underneath the summit, squeezed into what appears to be an architectural model.

Footing is the main difficulty on both routes. The limestone is polished to a smooth surface where thousands of boots have been, and trail runners without a grip are not the best. 

Baden-Baden – Panoramaweg and the Northern Black Forest

Macau – Coloane Island and Alto de Coloane

The Coloane Trail circumnavigates the interior of the island, and has a spur leading to the summit of Alto de Coloane at approximately 170 metres, the highest point in Macau. The vegetation is marked with interpretive signs and the road is tarmac in areas where erosion would otherwise be intense. 

Why the Trail Feels Nothing Like the Cotai Strip

The soundscape is entirely different in a few hundred metres of the trailhead. Cicadas take the place of traffic, and the towers of the resort are lost behind the ridgeline almost instantly.

The limiting factor is humidity, not gradient. The weather in Coloane during summer is unbearable and the path should be taken during the months of November and March.

Planning a Trail Day Around a City Break

Neither of these paths needs mountaineering boots, although smooth soles are penalized by Turtlehead Peak and the Monaco limestone, and it is a frequent error to carry only one pair of shoes to both restaurants and rock. 

Choosing Between the Four

Red Rock provides the most contrast between urban and wilderness, and the least distance between the two. Monaco provides the most dramatic perspective in comparison to the amount of effort put in it, especially at Tete de Chien.

Baden-Baden is the place to go when one wants to spend several days on foot, not just one day out, as the Panoramaweg can take a long weekend without getting tired. Coloane is a reward to travellers who think that Macau has nothing to offer except its resorts, which is a consistently false belief.

All these paths do not involve technical ability. All they need is the desire to wake up early in a vacation that is planned to be spent late.
